Formula 1 – Drive to Survive

My wife got mad at me for watching three episodes of Formula 1: Drive to Survive without her. Usually, we have a deal when it comes to binge watching series on Netflix or Amazon Prime. The deal goes something like this – if I watch the first two episodes in a series and I think she might like it, then I need to give her a week to catch up on those first two episodes. If she doesn’t catch up after one week then I can watch the entire series all on my own. She extends the same courtesy to me. Unfortunately, I was unable to honor our deal when it came to Formula 1: Drive to Survive. It was that good – I could not stop watching it.

My wife, miffed though she was, joined me for the last three episodes. Auto racing typically does not appeal to her. But I think we will watch a few of the Grand Prix races this year because this show really lets you get to know some of the younger drivers. The show also provides incredible insight into the blood, sweat and tears that go into the most prestigious of all motor sports. Once you watch this you will realize that the driver is only the face of the organization.

During the ten episodes, you get a behind the scenes look at all the team members it takes to make it happen. It is absolutely fascinating and the cinematography is incredible. Watching this series made me want to go and visit the city of Baku in Azerbaijan. The show is like Rick Steves meets Apollo 13 meets ESPN 30 for 30. You get travel, gripping stories and sports all in one. The other great thing is that the episodes are only about 35 to 40 minutes long. It should take you less than six hours to watch the whole thing. By the time you are done watching you will be trying to figure out how to watch the F1 races as a cord cutter. I will write a different post about that!
