WARNING: WINDOWS SECURITY PHONE SCAM
We just received a scam phone call at our office and we wanted to warn you about it whether you are a customer or not. This scam from overseas has been going on for a while and is documented on Microsoft.com. For more details, you can visit this Microsoft web page:
The call obviously originated overseas and it was listed as restricted. The phone rep said they had been notified about a security issue on my Windows computer. He wanted me to go to my computer and download a program so they could “troubleshoot” the issue. I played dumb and asked him to walk me through the process. At one point he wanted me to download a file so he could share my screen.
After a few minutes of listening to his nonsense, I told him I was a computer network admin and asked what changes this would make to my Windows registry. He immediately hung up.
Please do not ever fall for these scams. Do not ask them to send you anything via email and do not go to their website! Just like credit cards, never give any personal information or grant access to your computer to anyone you do not know. Hang up on these people! They are parasites trying to take advantage of you.
We will report this behavior to the FCC. If you think you are subject to a similar scam, then file a complaint here: https://consumercomplaints.fcc.gov/hc/en-us
