FuboTV Review
When FuboTV first came out in 2015 as a soccer streaming service, the user interface lacked intuitive features, the picture quality was spotty, the content was lacking, and the DVR features left a lot to be desired. Consequently, we did not endorse FuboTV as a viable replacement to traditional channel packages available from Xfinity or DirecTV.
Until quite recently, we would instead guide customers to YouTube TV or DirecTV Stream (for RSNs). If you can’t or don’t want to install an outdoor antenna for free local channels in HD, YouTube TV or DirecTV Stream are the next best options.
Testing FuboTV with Altitude Sports
Fubo TV, recently announced a partnership with Altitude Sports, home of the Nuggets and Avalanche. Watching these teams compete means a lot to people all over the front range, so we signed up for FuboTV. We wanted to see if they had improved their user interface, picture quality, and DVR. Most of all, we wanted to know if we could confidently recommend it to our customers as a complete channel replacement solution to Xfinity, DirecTV or a different live TV streaming service. Be warned FuboTV does not have the Turner networks, so nationally televised Avs and Nuggets games on TNT or TBS are not available – see DirecTV Stream for a full replacement.
FuboTV Testing Results
After much testing, the answer seems to be yes. We now feel confident recommending FuboTV as a viable StreamWise alternative to cable and satellite. While YouTube TV still has the best DVR, FuboTV nails the sports watching experience with integrated real time stats. While FuboTV has always been good at sports data integration, the experience for non-fans left some things to be desired. Prior versions of FuboTV felt like prime time viewing and movies were playing second fiddle to improvements in the sports features. Thankfully, recent improvements in many areas of general viewing make it a better experience for non-sports fans.
Setting up FuboTV
This video shows step by step instructions on how to download, sign up, and set up your FUBO TV account. Once you follow these steps you and your family members can test FUBO TV in your living room. If you feel confident with the user interface and it makes sense from a financial perspective, then you can feel confident in cutting the cord with Fubo TV. Use Fubo TV as your primary video subscription. Later this week, we will post a video showing the Fubo TV user interface and go through some of the basic viewing controls.
Is FuboTV perfect for cord-cutting?
Just like all TV services, its not perfect, and we want to be honest about that in our FuboTV review. FuboTV does not have the Turner networks (TNT, TBS, CNN), so nationally televised Avs and Nuggets games on TNT or TBS are not available – see DirecTV Stream for a full replacement.
Sadly FuboTV take a page out of the old Cable and Satellite sneaky pricing and is a bit misleading. FuboTVs plans start at $80 a month, however you are also required to get a RSN fee of $14 per month, bringing your real cost to $94 + tax per month. Their base plan has RSNs, so everyone has to pay that fee…
While less expensive and a better option than traditional Cable and Satellite, Fubo TV is still one of the most expensive Live TV streaming services. If your household doesn’t need RSNs, installing a whole-home, outdoor HD antenna is the best way to maximize savings. 80+ free local channels, when paired with a less expensive micro bundle of cable channels, can cut costs to 1/10th FuboTV Stream’s base package.
