Google Fiber – Coming Soon to the Front Range
If you live in Lakewood, Westminster, Golden, Wheat Ridge, or Denver, Google Fiber may soon be available at your home. To find out if Google Fiber will be serving your neighborhood, sign up to get alerts at their web site.
Keep in mind, it takes a lot of work to install a new fiber network in a town or city. Some construction will be required so as Google Fiber is brought to your neighborhood, you might see some traffic cones. But Google Fiber will probably use micro-trenchers to lay the fiber so you should expect no significant delays.
Fiber is Faster
Optical fibers are about the diameter of a strand of human hair and when bundled into a fiber-optic cable, they’re capable of transmitting more data over longer distances and faster than other mediums. It is this technology that provides homes and businesses with fiber-optic internet service.
Fiber also allows for simultaneous download and upload speeds. Cable internet, on the other hand, allows for much faster download speeds than upload speeds. While most people download more than they upload, as more and more people use interactive tools and games, including VR, upload speeds will become more important.
Other Options
If you don’t live in one of the above cities or towns, there might be other fiber options available to you. The best way to figure out if fiber is available at your address is to use the FCCs broadband coverage map. Just enter your address and you should be able to see a fairly accurate list of all the high speed internet available in your area.
